"Nature"

Pause for Thought, BBC Radio 2, 5th April 2001

If I said that I was over the moon to be here this morning you’d know exactly what I mean, and more importantly you’d know how I feel about being here.

And if I said your face is beaming like the sun, you would know how happy and healthy you’re looking!

But you know, our entire lives are so interwoven with nature that it should be quite normal to describe our feelings by referring to nature. It’s natural.

My anger raged like a storm is one example. Or, her face was like thunder!

No other words can describe so powerfully our deepest feelings.

Bahá’u’lláh, Founder of the Bahá’í Faith, put many spiritual concepts across by referring to nature.

Indeed He describes His Writings as an ocean and He invites us to: "Immerse yourselves in the ocean of My words," in order to "discover all the pearls of wisdom that lie hid in its depths."

One of the pearls of wisdom is the teaching of unity – the oneness of the human race, and the oneness of all the religions of God.

In describing the unity of humanity, Bahá’u’lláh taught that we’re all like the flowers in one garden, with our different colours adding to the beauty of the planet.

And how do you suppose He put across the unity of religions? Well, Bahá’u’lláh taught that there is only one true Faith - the Faith of God, and that all the world’s religions are progressive stages of that same one Faith.

He again refers to nature to explain that all of the great Founders of the different religions are in reality, like the rays of one sun, shedding their spiritual light and warmth to guide humanity.

Well, these are just a few pearls from the Ocean of Bahá’u’lláh’s Teachings which I believe can make our lives all the richer!

And all you have to do to find these priceless pearls is take the plunge – or at least take a dip!
