An oasis of calm in the chaos

Western Daily Press, September 2nd, 2002

THE computers have crashed, the coffee machine's packed up and the bop has got a bee in his bonnet.

What better than to slide off to the Tranquillity Zone to chill out in a relaxed, stress-free atmosphere. Dreamy music, aromatic incense, lilting poetry readings and squashy sofas are just the job to help harassed staff recharge their rundown batteries.

And now companies in the Swindon area are being urged to make room for a stress free zone, which will boost morale and productivity. A special course is being run next week to help them create a serene oasis free from the tensions, strife and anxiety of the modern-day place of work. It is being organised by Fidelma Meehan, projects co-ordinator of the Swindon branch of Bahá'ís, an independent world religion.

She said: "We decided to do a short training course because many people have enquired about setting up their own tranquillity zones." "The course is designed to give participants the necessary confidence, insights and skills to create a zone in the office or at home."

Four years ago the Bahá'ís of Swindon launched their own pioneering Tranquillity Zone at the Health Hydro in the town centre. Office workers were urged to pop in during their lunch hour or after work to loosen up in a pressure-free environment. The initiative has since attracted more than 3,000 visitors.

Fidelma said: "The main aim is to create an oasis of calm for the body, mind and soul." "An effective use of speech, silence and music are necessary to create an atmosphere of serenity."
