History of the Swindon Bahá'ís

Since the early days of the Bahá’í community in Swindon in the early 1980s, Bahá’ís have been keen to begin projects that will be of service to the wider community. To begin with of course, the numbers of Bahá'ís in the area was very small. However, as the community grew, more complex projects could be undertaken.
A significant step for the local Bahá'ís was the first election of the Spiritual Assembly of Swindon in 1984. In every town and locality where there are nine or more adult Bahá’ís, a Local Spiritual Assembly is elected. Once Swindon’s Local Spiritual Assembly was elected, the work of the local Bahá'ís became much more focused.

The initiatives of the Swindon Bahá'í community have always been ‘uniquely Bahá'í’ – they have focused on spiritual development, and meeting the spiritual needs of the town. The inspiration for these initiatives has always been the principles of the Bahá'í Faith, laid out in the Bahá'í Writings.

The perseverance of the community, its individuals and institutions in its search for such initiatives led to the start of the Tranquillity Zone project in 1998, and the Youth Empowerment and Training initiatives in 2001.The vision "Spirit of Swindon is Spirit of Service" will guide the efforts of the community in the future.
